Voted one of the best local CD’s of 2004 by Philadelphia’s City Paper, Driver is a full-length album of Mia Johnson’s original songs produced by Walt Bass (G Love, Laguardia) at Metropolitan Studios in Bryn Mawr, PA. Mia’s nights driving a cab in New Jersey and experiences accumulated over many years of “shoe-string” touring provided inspiration for the record’s title as well as the back-drop for creating the music. Themes of travel, motion, change and the road are pervasive in the lyrical composition and gradually spin the common thread that binds the songs together. The sound is a melody-led, rhythm-driven acoustic rock fleshed out with a tasty rhythm section; a lovely, wavering cello; a nice mixture of acoustic & electric guitars topped with solid lead and harmony vocals. In addition to these elements which are consistent throughout, featured performances by some of Philly’s favorites such as Garrett Dutton (a.k.a. G Love), Adrien Reju, The BurnDown Allstar’s Davy Quicks, and Philadelphia’s Alo Brasil provide some sweet textural highlights. Though the flavorful and rich production provides beautiful scenery for your voyage through Driver, Mia’s steady, honest voice and clever, weathered observations assure you’ll never lose your way.
